Quick Review Score:
Doing a little fishing for some hops can be a great hobby. Grand Teton Brewing has made it easy to find the fish with their Trout Hop Black IPA. All you have to do is go down to your favorite liquor store, or grocery store, and pick some up. You don’t even need special equipment or a license to drink it. Of course you do need to be 21 to enjoy it, but nothing else special. So, did this beer find the fish, or are we going home hungry tonight? Let’s find out:

Tasting Notes:
Throwing my line into the water I find out that the Trout Hop pours a nice dark brown color. The head is beige and faded quickly. Kind of like my hopes of catching fish usually does. The head had a medium bubble and there was no lacing.
Smelling the beer (not the fish) you get hit with a fresh citrus aroma from the hops. Then you pick up the smell of dark roasted grains that finished with a richness. There is a warmth to this beer that is very pleasing to the senses. You can also pick out some nice pine resins and a woody aroma in the beer.
Hops Rating:
6 out of 10 (Above Average Hoppy)
Your tongue starts out by tasting the roasted flavors from the grain as well as a strong punch of grapefruit from the hops. As the beer hits further back on the tongue you taste a little pine/ spruce flavor. It isn’t like you sucked on pine needles, but the pine is noticeable. There is a nice woody character to the beer at this point. In the aftertaste is a very robust flavor from the grains, and hints of burnt wood. The hops flex their muscles by hitting you with grapefruit flavors. This beer packs a punch for its size, so enjoy the battle reeling this one in.
The body on this Black IPA is medium-light, and the beer is on the hoppy side.
This beer gives you a hell of a fight with complexity and flavor. Your tongue will go crazy with picking out all of the flavors that this beer brings to the table. I really like the punch from the American hops, but there is a nice balance from the European hops as well. The nice citrus, piney, and woody notes work very well with the grains. You do want to enjoy hops to like this beer because it does have a strong hops note. This Grand Teton Black IPA is a wonderful beer that I hope you get the opportunity to try.
